Robert L. Shandry and Doris H. Shandry May 12, 1926 - September 27, 2020

veteran funeral

Celebrating 70 years of marriage on July 29 2020, the Lord saw fit to call home two of His most faithful servants within 10 days of each other. Doris H. Shandry, 92, died peacefully on September 17, 2020 in Elmcroft Assisted Living Facility. She & her husband, Robert L. Shandry, 94, had lived there for the past 2 years. He died peacefully as well on September 27, 2020. Their immediate survivor is Charles Shandry (York, Pa), their only child. As their son “Chuck” said, “Dad was a Marine, & I think he saw it as his duty to see that Mom wouldn’t die alone. Having fulfilled that duty, he was free to let go.” The Shandrys resided in Montoursville, Pa for the past 40 years, but moved to Elmcroft Assisted Living in June 2018. Both were under the care of UPMC Susquehanna Hospice for the past several months.
Doris was born September 12, 1928 in Shamokin, Pennsylvania. She was preceded in death by her parents, Henry B. & Kathyrn E. (Snyder) Anderson, and 3 sisters, Margaret (Anderson) Winter, Audrey (Anderson) Keiper, & B.Eleanor Anderson. Doris graduated from Shamokin High School & worked as a secretary for 4 years. She was always very involved & supportive in her family’s life.  Doris was a long-time member of the Montoursville Presbyterian Church, holding positions of Elder, Deacon, Sunday School teacher, & choir member. She enjoyed reading, PSU football, square dancing, playing pinochle, traveling, but was most happy when with her family & friends. Surviving (in addition to their son Charles) are nieces Kathy Keiper & Margaret (Daryl) Bridenbaugh, as well as nephews Daniel (Linda) Keiper, Bruce (Nancy) Keiper, & nephews William (Shelby) Winter & Randy (Karen) Winter.
Robert (“Bob”) was born May 12, 1926 in Danville, Pennsylvania. He was preceded in death by his parents, Richard B. & Kathryn E. (Derk) Shandry & brother Richard F. Shandry. Bob was honorably discharged from the U.S. Marine Corp after his service in WW2 in the South Pacific. He was a graduate of  Shamokin High School & Penn State University (“We are….Penn State”), holding a Bachelor’s Degree in Civil Engineering. He worked for various companies throughout his career, & retired from Williamsport Fabricators.Throughout their lives, Bob & Doris exemplified the phrase “putting faith in action”. Once retired, Bob volunteered with Habitat for Humanity as a construction supervisor for 11 years. He enjoyed it immensely, and accompanied the group on a Mission Trip to Honduras. Like Doris, Bob was very active in the Montoursville Presbyterian Church. Bob served as an Elder & Trustee. He also served 19 years as the Stated Clerk of Presbyterian Church U.S.A. for the Northumberland Presbytery which included Montoursville. Doris worked behind the scenes helping him (& the Presbytery) any way she could. They both shared a love for Golden Retrievers & PSU football. Bob loved woodworking & his products often became gifts. He had volunteered as a Boy Scout Leader in Lock Haven when their son, Charles, was a member. Bob also belonged to the Rotary Club.
Finally, Bob & Doris were surrogate parents/grandparents to a very grateful neighborhood, where they lived for 41 years. They especially became an”extended family” to Bud & Jan Smeenk (Leah & Luke), Ed & Cathy Smeenk, & Joseph & Marie Mifsud (Kelly, Erin, Kara & Jason).

Visitation will be held from 10-11 AM at Montoursville Presbyterian Church, 205 Tule Street, Montoursville on Saturday November 7, 2020. A Memorial Service (attendance limited to 50 people per Covid regulations) will then be held at 11AM. Burial will be at the convenience of the family.
