Harriet J. Luhta March 9, 1938 - April 25, 2023

Harriet J. Luhta, of Oval, passed away on Tuesday, April 25, 2023 at the Gatehouse Hospice Unit after a brief illness.  Harriet was born on March 9, 1938 in Oval and was the daughter of Margaret and Rufus McNitt.  She graduated from the Jersey Shore High School in 1956.  Later in life she attended Lycoming College and graduated with Honors in 1984 with a Bachelors of Arts in Accounting. She retired from the Commonwealth Bank where she had worked as an Auditor for many years.  Harriet and her husband, Raymond, were married on July 18, 1959 and celebrated 60 years of marriage together prior to his death on May 7, 2020.

Harriet loved taking family trips and spending time with her family.  She enjoyed many activities including cross stitch, knitting, coloring, flower arranging, poetry, reading, organizing, working with numbers and playing card games.  She also loved her church, the Oval United Methodist Church, where she taught Sunday School for many years, sang in the choir, served as the Church Scribe with her beautiful handwriting and served on numerous Church committees.  Additionally, she enjoyed a wonderful community of friends including those from her Card Club, her Share-a-Bit group, her Church and the United Methodist Women.  Harriet was also blessed with her good friend, Judy Machmer, whose friendship, fellowship and daily visits greatly enriched her life.

Harriet is survived by her two Sisters, Jane Bierley of Jersey Shore and Suzanne (Donald) Richard of Williamsport as well as a Brother-in-Law, John Luhta of Alpena, Michigan, two Sisters-in-Law, Ruth Paulin of Glenn Ellyn, Illinois and Irma Cole of Carmichael, California and over twenty nieces and nephews.

Funeral services, officiated by Pastor Max Furman, are scheduled for Friday, May 5, 2023 at 10:30 a.m. at the Oval United Methodist Church, followed by a short graveside internment service at the Oval Cemetery and a luncheon at the Church.  All family and friends are invited.  Additionally, there will be a short Visitation at the Church from 10:00 a.m. until 10:30 a.m.
